Design Space Exploration 2.0: Towards Optimal Design of Complex, Distributed Cyber Physical Systems

Embedded and cyber-physical systems (CPS) have a significant impact and drive the innovation in a large number of crucial industrial sectors such as the automotive industry, health industries, industrial automation and robotics, avionics and space. High-tech companies, e.g. ASML, Océ, Philips, that produce complex industrial CPS face serious challenges regarding the design of their next generation systems. Successful design of such systems requires quick answers to “what-if” questions with respect to possible design decisions/choices and their consequences on the system performance and cost. This calls for an efficient, industrially scalable, system-level design space exploration technology for complex, typically distributed, CPS, which does not exist yet. Therefore, this project will address this problem by researching and developing novel and scalable design space exploration methods, techniques, and tools that are applicable to a wide range of complex CPS and application domains. The results of the project would help to warrant the technological foundation needed for the continuation of the impact that embedded and cyber-physical systems have on our society.
