North Sea Reef Vitalization For Ecosystem Services (North Sea ReViFES)

During the last centuries, the Netherlands lost all of its offshore oyster reefs in the North Sea, which likely had a substantial impact on biodiversity, harvestable productivity and other ecosystem services. To regain the lost reefs and manage their services sustainably, we aim to (i) develop new techniques to restore them, and (ii) quantify harvestable ecosystem services provided by the reefs. Combining the acquired knowledge on restoration and ecosystem services, will provide the base for implementing an ecologicaleconomic model, where i) restored reefs support surrounding aquaculture and fisheries, ii) wind farm developers gain a competitive advantage in applying nature-inclusive infrastructure designs, iii) NGO’s can restore reefs more cost effectively and iv) the government has a knowledge base for shared North Sea usage.
