Low impact bottomtrawling

Extensive research has shown that electrical pulse fishing has a substantially lower ecological foot-print than the current alternative, tickler chain fishing. So far, electrical pulse gears have been optimized for net profit, without seriously taking its impact on the benthic ecosystem into account. We propose to optimize all aspects of pulse gears for minimal ecological impact. Optimizing electrode arrays and pulse parameters for optimal size and species selectivity can greatly reduce seabed disturbance and electrical exposure. This would most likely make pulse fishing the most optimal bottom trawling method, also from the viewpoint of environmentalists. In addition, we propose to develop an electro-sensory device that can be used in conjunction with electrical stimulation, or other means of stimulation to further reduce the impact by means of targeted stimulation.
