BioCollect - Innovative Biodegradable seed-mussel Collectors to optimize mussel yield

In the Netherlands, the mussel bottom-culture switched for seed from seed-fishing to seed mussel collectors (SMCs) to become less disruptive to nature. However, seed mussels collected are much more expensive given the cost of SMCs and the lowered survival of the relayed seed mussels. Hence, this deteriorates the revenue model for this in principle more sustainable aquacultural practice. The materials used in the current SMCs can have a negative impact to the environment, due to the realise of plastics. In this project a novel biodegradable substrate of socked shell material is developed and tested with the aim to (1) improves seed mussel collection and relaying success to higher the yield and to (2) reduce the environmental impact at the same time. The project aims to optimize the use of this new method by testing technical aspects like shell-packing-density and biodegradability rates, and mussel-culturing-issues like optimal timing and spatial configuration of seed-relay. Overall, this project will quantify the benefits of switching to innovative Biodegradable seed-mussel Collectors.
