Bottom Fishing Impact Assessment Tool (BFIAT)

Knowledge of environmental effects are an essential aspect of introducing new fishing gears. In order to accurately determine the ecosystem impact of fishing techniques, a scientific assessment is required. We will develop a “Bottom Fishing Impact Assessment Tool” (BFIAT), an online predictive application, to assess the benthic ecosystem impact of bottom fishing gears. Based on an existing biogeochemical model, this tool will allow fishing gear developers to calculate and help minimize environmental disturbances. This will facilitate innovation in the fishing industry towards environmentally friendly (reduced footprint) fishing techniques, while helping spreading awareness of human caused ecosystem impacts.
