Degradation mechanisms in high performance rope structures (LIFELINE)

Synthetic fiber ropes are commonly used in all kinds of applications, mostly applications that are in one way or another critical. For reasons of safety, it is very important to have a clear understanding of damage mechanisms in rope structures. Knowledge on degradation will enable lifetime predictions, which will enable timely replacement op ropes, avoiding unnecessary replacements without compromising safety.

The aim of the research is to analyze degradation mechanisms in ropes, leading to the formulation of a damage indicator. This damage indicator will be foundational for optimized rope designs and novel inspection techniques.
