HTCrowd: a high-tech platform for human crowd flows monitoring, modeling and nudging

Crowd management, under normal as well as under emergency conditions, is key to our daily safety. This project, performed in close collaboration with ProRail and Amsterdam municipality, will develop innovative ways to monitor, model, and nudge dense pedestrian crowds. A fine network of highaccuracy sensors, installed in the Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA train station, and in its immediate surroundings, will provide a world-unique database encompassing all most relevant crowd behaviours, with and without active crowd control measures by police and railway officials. To achieve a quantitative understanding of the observed behaviours, we will develop and employ innovative models inspired by statistical physics, field theories and active matter physics. Light and visual stimuli will be employed to nudge the motion of (large) crowds. Thanks to our physics-based models we will quantify the effect of each stimulus and optimize it to maximize its effectiveness. The proposed approach will not be specific to train stations; instead, it will be possible to employ it in virtually any urban facility.
