PACT, a new diagnostic tool to assess platelet function in the bleeding patient

U-PACT is a molecular diagnostics company experienced in platelet biology and diagnostics of bleeding disorders. We develop technology for accurate assessment of bleeding risk. Bleeding is a common side effect of chemotherapy against leukemia. As it is impossible to predict which patient will bleed, hematologists treat all patients with prophylactic platelet transfusions whenever their platelet count drops <5% of normal. This is a heavy burden on healthcare budgets of hospitals. Moreover, platelet transfusions are associated with a substantial health risk for receiving patients and should thus be limited to those patients with high bleeding risk. Platelet function can better predict bleeding risk than platelet count, but a reliable diagnostic test that determines platelet function at low platelet counts is lacking. U-PACT is the first to offer a tool, PACT, that addresses this need. PACT is also promising for diagnosis of platelet function disorders (PFDs). PFDs, inherited or acquired, are highly heterogeneous, and despite evident symptoms and a confirmed platelet function defect, the exact cause often remains unclear. Currently available diagnostics have moderate sensitivity for mild PFDs, are labor-intensive, require large blood volumes and are poorly reproducible. PACT allows PFD detection by easily discriminating between patients and healthy controls.
