Getting to the roots of stress resilience of potato plants

This proposal addresses the role of root development and plasticity in potato growth and stress resilience. We aim to uncover the contribution of the root system in maintaining yield under variable conditions, including salinity of the soil and low nitrogen availability. By screening natural variation in potato root development under these conditions, our objective is to identify genetic loci that contribute to robust root growth under variable conditions, which can be used as markers to assist in breeding more stress-tolerant potato varieties. The project will contribute to our understanding of plasticity of the potato root system and its contribution to yield under variable conditions.
