Upconverting Transmitters for 5G (UT-5G) - Power Efficiency in Digital and Analogue

To support the extreme growth of mobile traffic data, low power Giga-bit-per-second wireless communication links are required. These links will operate at millimeter wave frequencies. Extrapolating progress in semiconductor technology indicates that these systems, and in particular the digital parts and analogue RF transmitters, will operate at unacceptable power levels without breakthrough innovations.

The UT-5G project focusses on:
- obtaining large power savings based on the observation that the information content of the communication signals does not justify the precise representations and operations used in contemporary communication systems, and investigate matching representations and operations with the information content.
- obtaining as efficient as possible RF transmitters by self-calibration and by trading analogue functionality and accuracy in a smart way against digital functionality, and by taking the massive-MIMO requirements into account from the earliest start.
