Antenna Topologies and Front-end Configurations for Multiple Beam Generation

To meet ambitious 5G communication system requirements, new antenna arrays addressing many users at a time at the same frequencies with multiple beams have to be developed. The goal of this project is to study, evaluate, design and experimentally verify innovative active phased arrays supporting multiple beam operation, satisfying stringent requirements of 5G mobile communications, and compatible with mass production technology. Sparse sampling theory and sub-arraying technology will be used to develop novel array topologies including sparse, space tapered and reconfigurable sub-arrays. These topologies will resolve heat dissipation issues. Tailored to these topologies, multiple beam generation approaches will be proposed. Based on novel topologies, proof-of-concepts of novel antenna arrays will be designed, manufactured using low-cost manufacturing technologies and experimentally verified.
