Systematic Development of a Printable Strain-Hardening Cementitious Composite for Structural Purposes

3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) promises a high level of form freedom and customization, reduced labor and material use, and increased production speed. However, current 3DCP technologies lack the capacity to provide sufficient ductility under increasing deformation. This could become a show-stopper in the development of the technology. Therefore, the research team will develop a printable, strain hardening cementitious composite (3DP/SHCC). Rather than through trial-and-error and with the use of non-quantifiable concepts (as is current practice), the project will follow a systematic quantifiable approach by correlating (i) rheological and mechanical models of dormant state concrete during printing, and (ii) process parameters to mechanical performance of the printed product. This innovative approach will pave the way for the efficient development of printable concretes, as well as application and quality control guidelines.
