VORTECS: Ultrafast ultrasound blood flow quantification for diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Europe, with an increasing prevalence worldwide. Current monitoring and subsequent treatment options take into account only very simple geometrical generalized parameters, while patients could benefit substantially from the inclusion of personalized local blood flow patterns into therapy guidance. In this proposal, novel ultrasound-based vector flow imaging (VFI) techniques will be tailored to specific carotid and abdominal applications. Improvements in these ultrafast techniques can have a large impact on the incidence of stroke, aneurysm rupture and critical limb ischemia worldwide, reducing mortality.
For application in the carotid artery, high transmit frequencies will be utilized to improve resolution and accuracy of high-frame-rate, plane wave imaging sequences, using large beam steered angles and CMUT transducers. For applications in the abdominal aorta, ultrasound contrast agents will be utilized to improve the robustness of VFI and these techniques will be compared in vitro. To support the optimization of the newly developed VFI imaging sequences, the fundamental behavior of a novel class of monodisperse microbubbles will be investigated. Finally, the developed VFI sequences will be tested in vivo, to evaluate their ability to answer clinically relevant questions. This project will be performed in collaboration with leading global imaging (Philips), contrast agents (Bracco) and interventional device (Medtronic) industry.
