Novel Electrically Driven Environmental Control System for Aircraft

The Propulsion and Power group of the TU Delft is partnering with Aeronamic, a Dutch aerospace
company, and other companies operating in the Netherlands, to develop a disruptive technology that will greatly reduce the energy consumption on board of airliners. The Environmental Control System (ECS) provides air conditioning to the cabin and temperature control to all the electronics on board. It is the largest consumer of auxiliary power (up to 1.5% of total engine power). The team will study new ECS configurations based on the inverse Rankine thermodynamic cycle and on high-speed radial compressors, with the potential of increasing the efficiency of the system of one order of magnitude. The research will lead to new simulation tools, new design methods, optimal configurations and working fluids, which will be validated on a test rig which will also be realized as part of the project.
