Visual analytics for 3DOMICS: from single cell to tissue and back

The rapid advancements in single-cell measurement technologies are currently revolutionizing biology, with clinical impact from immunology to cancer research to neuroscience. On the other hand, spatially-resolved “omics imaging” techniques (“3DOMICS”) generate images that can now show how these cells are organized in their natural “tissue habitat”. This holds the key to unraveling disease mechanisms, for instance on how immune cells interact with cancer cells, or on how the system derails in auto-immune diseases. To extract all the information in such data, highly specialized and novel data analysis and visualization technologies are required. The aim of this proposal is to develop visual analytics techniques for integrated exploration and quantification of cellular contexts from combined, large scale single cell- and 3DOMICS data. This project will result in a set of novel analysis techniques and re-usable tools to gain insight in this highly complex data. Demonstrator applications in immunology and neuroscience will be worked out together with life-science research partners and LUMC, and with the Allen Brain Institute in Seattle.
