Advanced failure modelling for safety of welded steel ship structures

Accurate assessment of safety at sea requires the assessment of failure behavior of welded steel structures, modelled in a way that can be simulated with a realistic amount of engineering and computational effort. Specific examples include collision, grounding, raking, attacks on naval ships, and offshore blast walls exposed to an accidental explosion, among others. By modelling cracks within finite elements, XFEM of shell elements will meet the balance between cost and accuracy, but it requires considerable development before it is ready for engineering practice. This project will make XFEM more practical by relating its modelling and input to material properties, rather than the structural-level approach currently used. With this project, we will show that a structurally representative dynamic test can be predicted with an XFEM simulation based on material-level data.
