UNRAVELING THE BEHAVIOUR OF SiO AS ASTROPHYSICAL TRACER

Samenvatting

The goal of the proposed research is to characterise the formation of the SiO molecule. This molecule has been mainly detected in outflows in star forming regions and it is often use as a tracer for these areas. We know that grain-grain collisions and sputtering of grains can result in free silicon in the gas phase which can then react with OH to form SiO. A detailed understanding of this reaction by means of quantum chemical calculations could help us to learn more about the physical and chemical conditions during star formation when this molecule is formed. As a first step the potential energy surface of the SiO and OH system will be determined. This result cannot only be used to study reactions in which these species are involved, but also to study the behaviour of the hydroxyl radical on a silicate grain, which is important for a better understanding of the formation of water in the interstellar medium.
