Understanding How Testosterone Influences Paternal Caregiving Behaviour

Research shows that testosterone importantly influences paternal behaviour, although generally in a negative way when it involves sensitive caregiving. Recent studies however indicate that testosterone may also act as a facilitator in caregiving contexts, especially in situations where protection is required. The proposed research meticulously examines these puzzling dissociative effects of testosterone on paternal caregiving behaviour using both correlational and causal research methods in which observations of paternal behaviour are combined with biobehavioural measures. This research can provide vital contributions to a deeper understanding of fatherhood, which has been neglected in parenting research, despite fathers increasingly contributing to child care.
