The association between empathy development and bullying behavior in children and early adolescents.

Samenvatting

The general goal of this study is to describe and clarify the association between bullying and empathy in childhood and early adolescence. The central premise of this study is that bullies develop and use a deviant cognitive strategy that we call "juvenile dehumanisation". It is further hypothesized that as a consequence, bullies lack empathy towards specific peers, although their general empathic competence is not necessarily deficient. Finally, we hypothesize that the association between empathy and bullying changes with age. Dehumanisation cognitions allow bullies to maintain their harassing habits and antisocial relationships across development, despite increasing empathy capacities.
