Using data streams to support the integrated design, construction and management of interconnecting infrastructures

We live in a dynamic environment, with changing demands for assets, due to external factors such as climate change, new technologies such as self-driving cars, energy transition and increase in data streams, but also due to changing societal demands, for instance related to sustainability issues, and changing mobility patterns. How to cope with these changes? How to realise flexible, adaptive networks and fit-for-purpose solutions? Increased integrated functionality and mutual dependency of critical infrastructures makes development more complex. Main challenges for public asset managers are to keep the network up-to-date and to maximise value. For keeping the network up-to-date and fit-for-purpose, resilience and future flexibility are needed. In addition to maximise value, asset managers need to be open for new opportunities and untraditional solutions coming from outside their own sphere of influence. Monitoring growing data streams generated by infrastructures and users is important in development, maintenance and operation of these critical infrastructures. This proposal is aimed at using data streams for the development of infrastructure projects, new assets, replacement of assets or upgrading of assets. The approach foreseen is that focus will not only be placed on data analysis, extrapolation of information for future use and application, but also on integrated design and collaborative relationships. Successfully integrating data streams in collaborative practices of integrated design requires new skills and competences of operators’ project managers. In close collaboration with the asset managers, we will use a rapid cycle research approach in which we will be involved in new initiatives and existing programmes.
