LEDs make it resilient


Greenhouse horticulture is responsible for approximately 10% of the natural gas consumption in The Netherlands, with high sodium lamps being a major energy consumer. LED technology provides exciting new opportunities, not only to reduce energy inputs, but also to increase primary production and improve sustainable pest control.
Here, we will investigate the effects of different light quality x temperature conditions on crop production and resilience, especially crop resistance to pests from different feeding guilds and biological control of different pest species, crop growth, and underlying crop physiology. Light quality and temperature influence crop phenotype (growth and physiology) with important consequences for the crop’s interactions with pests and their natural enemies. For instance, we have recently shown that light quality influences pest resistance of tomato plants as well as the attraction of biological control agents.
The proposed research aims at making tomato production systems in greenhouses more resilient to pest outbreaks by the smart use of LED technology, in combination with saving energy and promoting crop production. This includes the comparison of tomato accessions to select for accessions that have the best responses to light manipulation. The programme consists of three workpackages: LEDs for plant growth, LEDs for guided plant physiology and LEDs for plant resilience in terms of pest control.
The proposed research combines different disciplines, including photobiology, physiology, chemistry, entomology, and ecology and will be carried out at Wageningen University and Research as well as in commercial settings of our partners.
