Research Visit Prof. Ilya Rhyzkov


The understanding of ion transport in nanopores and nanochannels is of fundamental importance in various areas of science and technology, such as separation and purification, energy conversion and chemical sensors. Prof. I. Ryzhkov has developed novel 2D models of ionic transport in nanopores that go beyond the state of the art. At the same time, Dr. de Vos (university of Twente) and co-workers have recently developed new membrane materials that demonstrate unique transport properties towards ions. This includes novel membranes based on carbon nanotubes. During this research visit the Prof. Rhyzkov, Dr. De Vos and others (Prof. Lammertink, Prof van Roij, Dr. Biesheuvel, Dr. Porada and Dr. Dykstra) will work closely together to develop advanced theoretical approaches and mathematical models to describe our recently observed ion transport phenomena. The expected outcome of this visit will be a strong new collaboration, one or more research papers in excellent journals in the field. Moreover, a better understanding of ion stransport can lead to the development of new and better membranes, of direct importance to industrial partners such as Pentair X-flow, NX Filtration and Fuji.
