Developmental trajectories to excellence: Examining the interplay between students potential ability, background, motivational, emotional, social, and educational characteristics to explain excellence

Samenvatting

Many students, especially high ability students, do not achieve to their full potential. Therefore, in the proposed study, the academic developmental trajectories of (potentially) excellent students will be studied. It will be examined how cognitive ability, background conditions, developments in motivation, emotions, and social relations relate to excellence. To furthermore gain insight on how to promote excellence, it will be examined how factors of the learning context, in interaction with the aforementioned factors, contribute to the realization of potential into excellence. Using data of the COOL cohort study, information of around 20.000 students from year 5 (grade 3) of primary school until year 3 of secondary school will be available. Additional longitudinal data (questionnaires, interviews, and observations) will be collected at 10 schools during one school year to examine educational practices that promote excellence more elaborately.
