NWO attaches great importance to the scientific integrity of the research it funds and makes every effort to prevent and detect violations of integrity. Indeed, research that lacks integrity can cause direct damage (for example to the environment or patients) and can affect public trust in science and trust between scientists. It is essential that scientific research is conducted in accordance with the guiding principles of scientific integrity: honesty, diligence, transparency, independence and responsibility.
That is why the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity is the guiding principle for NWO’s integrity policy. Everybody who submits an application to NWO must state that they are familiar with the code and that they are complying with it. NWO also requires researchers to submit progress reports after their applications have been awarded funding stating that they are adhering to the code.
Scientific Integrity Desk
Anyone who believes that the Dutch Code of Conduct for Scientific Integrity is being violated by researchers who have applied for or received NWO funding can submit a complaint to NWO Scientific Integrity Desk. Complaints are dealt with in accordance with the NWO Scientific Integrity Complaints Procedure, which is consistent with the 2018 Dutch Code of Conduct for Scientific Integrity.
In accordance with this complaints procedure, the NWO Scientific Integrity Desk has a clear safety net function. Basically, complaints should be submitted to and dealt with by the Scientific Integrity Committee of the knowledge institution where the person against whom the complaint is directed works. NWO deals with scientific integrity complaints when the following two conditions have been met:
- there is a funding relationship with NWO and
- the institution where the accused is employed does not have a Scientific Integrity Committee.
If you would like to submit a complaint to the NWO Scientific Integrity Desk, or if you have any questions about the above information, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
