Science (ENW)

NWO encourages excellent research in the NWO Domain Science (ENW). Various funding instruments are available to achieve this.

The NWO Domain Science (ENW) comprises seven disciplines: Astronomy, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Life Sciences, Mathematics and Physics.

The Board of the NWO Domain Science wants to give ideas from the scientific field, which have the potential to grow into new communities around a theme, a chance to flourish. These ideas can concern fundamental research, public-private partnerships, or major societal issues. The spectrum of funding instruments in the NWO Open Competition ENW, in particular, makes this growth possible.

  • The board of the NWO Domain Science

The NWO Domain Science has a Domain Board that is responsible for developing the policy. The Domain Board takes decisions about the awarding of funds.

Members are pre-eminent professors in the domain of the exact and natural sciences at Dutch universities or research institutes. The chair is a member of the NWO-wide Executive Board. This Board is a collegial board. The members jointly represent the entire scope of science.

The composition of the board (as of September 1, 2020) is as follows:

    • Prof.J. (Jan) de Boer (University of Amsterdam), Chair, also member of the Executive Board
    • Prof. I.C.W. (Ilja) Arts (Maastricht University)
    • Prof M.R. (Maarten) van Steen (University of Twente)
    • Prof. M. (Moniek) Tromp (University of Groningen).
    • Dr P.E. (Peter) Wierenga (former Philips)
    • Prof B.J. (Bas) Zwaan (Wageningen University & Research)

  • Round Tables

The NWO Domain Science has appointed seven disciplinary advisory committees to facilitate an effective collaboration between the board, the office and 'the field'.

The disciplinary advisory committees have been given the name 'round tables' and are made up of researchers. With the establishment of the round tables the research field has been organised in such a way that it can advise the board within the new NWO.
Below you can find an overview of the tables.

  • Organisation Domain Science (ENW)

The office of the NWO Domain Science realises the established policy and prepares new policy to support the Domain Board. The office is the first point of contact for researchers and connects the scientific field with NWO. It deals with funding applications, manages programmes and projects, and supports NWO steering groups and committees in the realisation of their tasks.

  • Strategy NWO Domain Science 2019-2022

Based on the new NWO strategy and input from stakeholders, NWO Domain Science  drew up a strategic manifesto in 2018. In this document entitled "Off the beaten track", the board outlines the course for the NWO Domain Science over the next three years.

The NWO Domain Science stimulates excellent research through research funding and setting the agenda. In this capacity it is the coordinator of natural sciences research in the Netherlands. The NWO Domain Science connects researchers with each other and with civil society organisations and industry. We do this by organising meetings and maintaining close contacts with researchers and stakeholders.

At the bottom of this page, you will find a summary of the document in English. For further information please contact NWO Domain Science.
