Big data and promising start (NWA)

Children in vulnerable families who receive the necessary help and support earlier in life have a better chance of a good start. But how can these children and their families, who often have complex problems before, during and after pregnancy, be detected as early as possible? And how can big data research help with that?

  • Aim and objectives

Paying attention to prevention early in the life of a child, or even during pregnancy or efforts to become pregnant, can yield a lot of potential benefits. A proper recognition of the vulnerability of children and families in relation to properly coordinated care or support requires a complete picture and optimal information (data). The increasing availability of large and complex datasets and other datasources provide new possibilities to investigate these relationships. It also makes it possible to determine which role big data analyses could play in providing a promising start for children.

    Early identification

The research intends to contribute to the early identification of (risk) characteristics that determine whether children and (future) families are or will be vulnerable. Identifying such risks will facilitate the provision of timely and appropriate help and support for a promising start.

Professionals from perinatal care and the youth health service, knowledge institutions, researchers from the natural and physical sciences, social sciences and humanities, and social medicine and health sciences as well as other interested parties are cordially invited to jointly contribute their expertise to this research.

  • Budget and duration

In the context of the Dutch Research Agenda, 2.64 million euros will be made available for research for this programme.

  • Partners

Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport
