Picturing the Visual Artist. Formations of Artisthood in Photographic Portraits: 1960-2000

The history of modern art is abounding with photographic representations of visual artists, in art historical as well as popular media. Not only are such photographs valuable documents; as they grow to be one of the most widespread, accessible and appealing sources through which the modern artist is presented to the public in the 1960s, they are also able to convey particular notions of artisthood. Moreover, the period between 1960 and 2000 constitutes a time in which artisthood was constantly redefined, raising question as to the photographs' role in the propagation of such changing ideals. In this research project, I aim to study the photographic representation of visual artists as a genre and its role in the expression of constantly negotiated notions of artisthood. Rather than focus on specific artists, I will examine a corpus of photographs published in printed media so as to map and analyze (generalized) concepts of artisthood conveyed therein, ranging from the pragmatic worker of the early 1960s to the diligent networker of the 1990s, and to assess them within shifting art historical, cultural and socio-political discourses on artisthood.
