Knowledge Forum for Development (KF4D)

Knowledge Forum for Development (KF4D)

The Knowledge Forum for Development (KF4D) was a joint initiative of nine Dutch knowledge institutions and government ministries. In the period 2011-2012, they jointly worked within KF4D on policy for research and higher education in the area of sustainable global development. The initiative has now been concluded.

KF4D focused on sustainable global development, especially of higher education and scientific research in developing countries. The forum encouraged the use of existing sources of funding for research and education that is relevant for development problems.

Nine organisations worked together in KF4D:

  • NWO and WOTRO
  • Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU)
  • SAIL, the platform of Dutch institutions for international education
  • Platform for International Education (PIE)
  • Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW)
  • The Netherlands Association of Universities of Applied Sciences (HBO-raad)
  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  • Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation
  • Ministry of Education, Culture and Science

KF4D was a successor to the Platform MDG Profs, which focussed on collaboration in trying to realise the Millennium Development Goals.

KF4D's task was to advise the policy organs of the organisation involved. In addition KF4D had an advisory role for other organisations, such as the Advisory Council for Science and Technology Policy (AWT), the Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR), the National UNESCO Committee, Nuffic, Dutch co-funding organisations and European platforms.
