Dutch Research agenda - Theme: Ecology and North Sea

Interaction between ecology and offshore wind energy

The Dutch research Agenda theme-Ecology and North Sea focuses on the interaction between ecology and the physical aspects of wind farms on the Dutch part of the North Sea. The consortia will work in an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary manner with the involvement of the entire knowledge chain.

The North Sea is used for many different purposes such as fishing, maritime transport, water purification, the extraction of oil, gas and sand, nature and recreation. The north Sea has become an energy supplier as well. The increasing size of offshore energy production puts additional pressure on the balance between the various functions. Making the foreseen upscaling of offshore wind energy as sustainable as possible requires negative ecological effects to be prevented or at least mitigated. Opportunities to strengthen the ecology or to deploy ecology to benefit other offshore ecosystem services may also be used.

Aim

The aim of the programme Ecology and North Sea is to develop knowledge within this context across the entire chain concerning the specific interaction between ecology and the physical aspects of wind turbines and wind farms and to provide an action perspective for policy, implementation and practice. The programme focuses on crucial interactions and possible bottlenecks, such as interactions between wind turbines and birds or bats, and the effects on the ecosystem's capacity. Providing a hard substrate and an undisturbed seafloor are examples of interactions that provide ecological opportunities.
