Open Research Area (ORA)

Open Research Area (ORA)

The Open Research Area (ORA) funds joint research projects in the social sciences in participating countries. NWO will not be participating in the sixth call.

The NWO budget for this instrument will be transfered to the Open Competition – SSH.

The partners for the Open Research Area (ORA) have announced their sixth joint call for proposals due to open Spring 2019. The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) will not be participating in the sixth ORA Call. The reason for this is that NWO focusses on new forms of international collaboration in its new strategic plan (2019-2022).

For example, via the principle of Money Follows Cooperation, NWO will remove the boundaries and facilitate bottom-up international collaboration in all the research it funds. In addition, in most funding schemes international cooperation is part of the funding possibilities. Of course, NWO will continue to collaborate with sister organisations in the relevant international networks of research funders.

Four national funding organisations started this programme in 2010 to strengthen international cooperation in the social sciences. These four organisations are:

  • L'Agence nationale de la recherche (ANR, France)
  • Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, Germany)
  • Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC, UK)
  • NWO Social Sciences and Humanities (NWO-SGW, formerly NWO Social Sciences, NWO-MaGW).

Five successful calls have been organised. In the first call (2010) fifteen projects have been funded. In the second call (2011/2012) ten projects have been funded. The National Science Foundation (NSF) from the United States joined the ORA partners in the third call. In the fourth call twenty projects received funding, seventeen of which included researchers in the Netherlands. More information about the projects that have been funded in the different calls can be found in the press releases below.
