Monday afternoon meeting for all new P.I.'s

Monday 24 January | 15.30 hrs – 16.30 hrs, Online

How do the Dutch funding instruments work? Are there any special opportunities for you as new principal investigators (P.I.'s)? How to become (even more) engaged with the scientific community in the Netherlands? These and many more questions will be addressed in an informative meeting which is organised for all new group leaders and principal investigators, active in any field of physics. We especially encourage participation of those who have come to the Netherlands in the last 3 years. This meeting helps you to familiarise yourself with various aspects of the Dutch research landscape and is organised by the Dutch Physics Council, with support of the NWO Round Table Physics. This afternoon meeting is scheduled prior to the Monday Evening group leader meeting on 24 January 2022 at the NH Koningshof in Veldhoven. You can sign up during your registration for the NWO Physics @ Veldhoven meeting. The Dutch Physics Council hopes to welcome many new P.I.'s. For more information about the Dutch Physics Council, see www.dutchphysicscouncil.nl.

Monday Evening group leader Meeting

Monday 24 January | 16.45 hrs – 18.15 hrs, Online

On the late afternoon of Monday 24 January 2022, the Round Table Physics and the NWO Domain Science invite group leaders in the field of physics for a special event online. The group leader meeting is open to all P.I.’s (TT assistant professor and more senior) in physics disciplines in the Netherlands. The Monday Evening group leader meeting is a great way to catch up with colleagues, get to know new P.I.’s in the country, and discuss important topics in an informal setting.

Workshops

Inclusive assessment – practical tips for a more inclusive physics community

Registration for this workshop is required. The target audience for this workshop is principle investigator. Reserve your spot by sending an email to physicsveldhoven@nwo.nl Spots will be given on a first come-first serve basis.

In this workshop we invite you to explore how tools from NWO’s “inclusive assessment initiative” could be used to make your everyday situations - like teaching, research or recruitment & selection - more inclusive. NWO’s video’s on inclusive assessment will be taken as a starting point to illustrate how NWO is optimising the assessment process and why this is important. NWO and Dr. Carolin Ossenkop (Connectify, diversity coaching & consulting) then invite you to discover what you can do to increase diversity and inclusion in your research, (research) group, organisation and community. In this hands-on session, day-to-day situations will be discussed so that you will leave this workshop with practical tools and tips that you can implement immediately on the work floor

Large-Scale Research Infrastructures for the physics community

In September 2021 the new National Roadmap for Large-Scale Research Infrastructure 2021 was handed to Minister van Engelshoven. This Roadmap is intended as a guide for making strategic choices for investments in innovative research infrastructures. In the new Roadmap, nine Groups (with substantive, thematic or technical overlap) present, on behalf of the Dutch research field, their proposals for investments in large-scale research infrastructures for the coming ten years. This research infrastructure then has the highest priority for science in the Netherlands and can qualify for NWO funding. In the coming five years, a total of 200 million euros will be distributed over two funding rounds. In this session Frank Linde (UvA/NIKHEF), member of the Permanent Committee for large-scale research infrastructure will elaborate on the goals and visions of the Permanent Committee for the physics community. Other speakers in this session are Britta Redlich (RU), Gijs Nelemans (RU) and Jom Luijten (TU/e). They will share best practices on working towards Large-scale research infrastructures, roadmap application and/or (inter)national collaboration.

Is there a future for me outside the academic world?

As a PhD or Postdoc you are deeply involved in your research, but are you already thinking about your future? What are your ambitions after your current project? Only 3% of all PhD's in the Netherlands will be a professor.

In this workshop you can orientate yourself on a future outside Academia.
We will discuss different opportunities, what kind of jobs are available, how are they called, where you can find those positions, which transferable skills you need and could already develop during your PhD etc. PhD's who have made the step outside Academia will tell you about their experiences. They will give their insights and tips and tricks and you will have the chance to discuss your questions with them.
