Partners in science

The Netherlands is facing major social challenges. These challenges call for groundbreaking solutions with impact. Scientific research is an important breeding ground for answers to issues such as climate change, ageing, cyber security and health. In addition to the tried-and-tested programmes of free, unfettered research, talent programmes and practical research, NWO is vigorously pursuing the use of strategic instruments from the Dutch Research Agenda and the participation in the Knowledge and Innovation Covenant: DRA and KIC. The programmes have two goals: achieve scientific breakthroughs and boost (social) innovation.

Knowledge and innovation are indispensable

Knowledge and innovation are indispensable for a prosperous Netherlands. The government is investing more in research and innovation. The themed research programmes KIC and DRA are being assigned key roles. KIC and DRA are designed to reinforce the Netherlands’ sustainable growth capacity.

These are multi-year, dynamic research programmes with room for new developments; they have sufficient scope to achieve social and/or economic impact and bring together public and private parties in networks.

Moreover, they both focus on knowledge utilisation and interdisciplinary research – compulsory cooperation between scientists working in the humanities, natural sciences and social sciences. This safeguards social innovation.
