On Friday 4 June 2021, the annual Stakeholder Meeting of the DeepNL programme took place. Ninety DeepNL researchers, interested scientists and professionals from the public and private sector came together online to discuss the progress of the projects within the program.

Expansion of the DeepNL community

DeepNL is a long term research programme with the aim to improve the understanding of the dynamics of the subsurface under de influence of human activities. Earlier this year, three projects were awarded funding within the second funding round, the Call for Tenure Track Candidates. Johannes Miocic, Tanmaya Mishra and Maja Rücker have started on a tenure track position at the University of Groningen, University of Twente and Eindhoven University of Technology, respectively. At the start of the stakeholder meeting, they introduced themselves and their projects to the stakeholders and other DeepNL researchers.

At the beginning of July, the grating decision for the third financing round, Call 2a, will take place. Seven new projects will be added to the programme. With this, DeepNL will have eighteen projects in its portfolio.

Progress current DeepNL projects

The eight current DeepNL projects shared their progress and research results. This year’s meeting highlighted the promising preliminary results by the projects 'InFocus: An Integrated Approach to Estimating Fault Slip Occurrence' (Vossepoel et al.), presented by Ylona van Dinther, and 'DeepImage: Multi-scale geophysical imaging, monitoring and forecasting of induced seismicity ' (Wapenaar et al.), presented by Aukje Veltmeijer.

EPOS-NL and KEM

Last November, the DeepNL researchers were already introduced to Ronald Pijnenburg, project manager EPOS-NL. During the stakeholder meeting, he explained the latest developments within EPOS-NL and highlighted the opportunities the physical infrastructure and support on data storage and access offers to researchers.

On behalf of the Knowledge Programme on Effects of Mining (KEM), Ipo Ritsema gave a short presentation about the completed and recently started projects, future priorities and the public seismic HRA tool. Thursday, June 24, 2021, a second KEM-DeepNL colloquium will take place. The aim of the colloquia series is to exchange knowledge and to provide an academic discussion platform between KEM and DeepNL researchers.

DeepNL annual report

Each year NWO composes a report that describes the progress of the programme and research projects. The third edition was published last April and is digitally available at the bottom of this page.

Most of the presentations mentioned in this article are available at the bottom of this page. Presentations that are not yet available will be added at a later date. Also read the annual report and meeting programme.
