Another 78 promising young scientists receive Veni funding from NWO of up to 280,000 euros. Sixty researchers from the Social Sciences and Humanities domain (SSH) and eighteen from the Applied and Engineering Sciences domain (AES) can further develop their own research ideas in the coming three years.

How has oil changed the world order? How does optimism arise? But also new methods to print large pieces of living muscle tissue and to remove nanoplastics from drinking water. Just like every year, the newest Veni laureates will focus on a broad spectrum of research themes in the coming years. They receive their funding from the Veni round of 2021, just like the 89 previously awarded researchers from the ENW and ZonMw domains.

The overview includes the names of all laureates, their knowledge institutions and short summaries of their research projects (Dutch and English).

Adjusted planning

The Veni is awarded by NWO every year. These awards concern the second and last part of the Veni round 2021. In recent years, NWO has had to alter its planning of the Veni rounds, forced by corona and a hack. This led to different planning scenarios for the various domains. NWO used the original planning from before the hack for the domains ENW (no preproposal phase yet) and ZonMw (not affected by the hack); the grants were already announced in December 2021. For the TTW and SGW domains the decisions were made in March and April respectively. Now that all laureates are known, we also publish the facts and figures for the full round.

The new Veni round opens in the beginning of May.

NWO Talent programme

Together with Vidi and Vici, Veni is part of the NWO Talent Programme. Veni is aimed at researchers who have recently obtained their doctorate. Within the Talent Programme researchers are free to submit their own subject for funding. In this way NWO encourages curiosity-driven and innovative research. NWO selects researchers based on the quality of the researcher, the innovative character of the research, the expected scientific impact of the research proposal and possibilities for knowledge utilisation.

Please find the answers to a number of frequently asked questions about the assessment process and the award percentages. These questions were asked when the Vici grants were announced earlier this year, and they also partly apply to the other parts of the NWO talent programme.
