In June 2019, the projects from the fourth call of the Food & Business Global Challenges Programme gathered for joint learning and exchanges. The participants reflected on progress and research findings, including bottlenecks and challenges in their projects. In depth discussions took place on the concept and application of scaling. Additionally, a Public Dialogue on ‘Scaling Climate-Smart Agriculture in East Africa’ was organised at the International Livestock Research Institute in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Representatives from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and seven Security & Rule of Law (SRoL) Applied Research Fund projects participated in a joint meeting on 11 July 2019 in The Hague. The projects started in December 2018 following a call for proposals on the political dilemma of legitimate stability. This meeting was focused on exchange and uptake of the research approaches and (preliminary) findings.

Representatives of eight Ugandan Food & Business Applied Research Fund (ARF) projects – from research, the private sector, NGOs and governmental agencies – gathered for a country workshop in Kampala on 18-20 June. The main theme was scaling of innovations from food and agricultural research and what is needed in Ugandan policy and practise.

From 15-17 May nine research projects, funded in the call for proposals on Seed System Development of the NL-CGIAR research programme, came together for their joint kick-off meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The aim of the meeting was to identify cross-linkages and develop joint pathways to outcomes for the programme. Project partners from research, policy and practice took part in the kick-off meeting.

On 21-22 March, over fifty international researchers and representatives from NGOs, private sector and governments participated in the Annual Meeting of the Urbanising Deltas of the World research and innovation programme. Besides presenting highlights of each of its thirteen projects, the meeting stimulated discussions about creating knowledge for impact. A timely topic, given that most of its projects are at full speed, while some of the first call projects are nearing completion.

In December 2018, NWO-WOTRO Schience for Global Development awarded eight project proposals in the second call for proposals of the Joint SDG research programme. This research programme aims to develop new, evidence-based knowledge that bridges the fundamental understanding and its use to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The knowledge should be of benefit to the most vulnerable people in Lower- and Middle Income Countries (LMICs). On Thursday 4 April 2019, representatives of the consortium member organisations of all funded projects attended a kick-off meeting.

'If you are not ashamed of the first version of your story, you waited too long to share it' - one of the valuable tips given by the ‘stories of change’ trainer during the midterm workshop for the SRHR research projects in Jordan. The workshop focused on research uptake, cross-learning, sharing preliminary research findings with the wider SRHR community in Jordan and receiving useful recommendations for linking research to policy from Jordan experts.

“The many components of food systems may create trade-offs in the short and the long term, such as affordability of food versus nutritional value.” This was one of the conclusions about working through a Food System Perspective in research for food and nutrition security. Eight consortia of projects funded in the third call of the Food & Business Global Challenges Programme (GCP3) gathered in Accra, Ghana, for a midterm meeting with the twofold purpose of learning and assessing progress.

A long-term, holistic approach to supporting CSOs in their own right, beyond just meeting donor priorities, is recommended for the new Dialogue & Dissent programme of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). This is one of the conclusions of the expert meeting ‘Research for Dialogue & Dissent 2.0’ as part of the Assumption research programme ‘New roles of CSOs for inclusive development’, hosted by the INCLUDE platform on 10 January 2019 in The Hague.
