In the beginning of 2020, NWO launches a new research programme on the interactions between the Sustainable Development Goals in developing countries. The programme has a total of six million euros available for three international, interdisciplinary and knowledge chain-wide consortia. The deadline for pre-proposals is foreseen at the end of March.

NWO awarded over € 4 million to 10 projects in the NWO Call Cybersecurity - Digital Security & Privacy. Societal and private partners jointly co-finance € 1.4 million. With the Call Cyber Security - Digital Security & Privacy, NWO wants to facilitate the need for research collaboration across the entire cyber security chain. The average duration of the projects is four years.
Lifestyle of the elderly, neurotechnology, agricultural production systems, energy storage and accelerating sustainability. To achieve progress in these areas, the Dutch Research Council (NWO) is investing 39 million euros in five large, interdisciplinary research consortia within the Crossover programme.
NWO is going to introduce a uniform narrative curriculum vitae format in the upcoming Vici round. This measure dovetails with a new approach for recognising and rewarding scientists and follows on from the position paper Room for everyone’s talent, which NWO recently published with its partners. Moreover, NWO has had good experiences in recent years with the narrative CV in the pre-application pilot for the Veni in the NWO domains SSH, AES and ZonMw.
Starting from 1st January 2020, NWO will update its data management protocol, reinforcing its longstanding commitment to Open Science. The basic principles will remain. NWO emphasizes the importance of responsible data management and expects researchers to carefully manage data resulting from NWO-funded research and prospectively plan for data sharing and preservation.
The board of NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences has granted 66 projects within the programmes High Tech Systems and Materials (HTSM), Open Technology Programme, Partnership NWO Domain AES - ESI: Mastering Complexity (MasCot) and Take-off.
Five projects in which Dutch researchers participate have received funding from the Social Innovation call of the Trans-Atlantic Platform. The call was open to transatlantic innovative collaborations from the social sciences and humanities aimed at social innovation. The projects with Dutch participants will investigate social innovation in various themes, such as the social housing market, art, and social activism.
The NWO Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) Domain Board wants to enter into a sustainable collaboration with the SSH research field to shape NWO policy. Researchers in the social sciences and humanities have expressed the same wish. The Domain Board is establishing SSH roundtables to structure the discussions with the field. The chairs of these roundtables have already been selected; now we are looking for researchers interested in becoming roundtable members.
‘Often, at the end of research interventions, outcomes are not scaled up and impact becomes limited. It's not just about producing evidence of what works, but also ensuring that successful projects are scaled up.’ This was one of the conclusions during the Food & Business Applied Research Fund (ARF) country workshop in Benin.
