Within the academic community the search is on for a new approach to recognising and rewarding academics. The VSNU (Association of Universities in the Netherlands), NWO (Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research), NFU (Netherlands Federation of University Medical Centres) and ZonMw (Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development) will team up in 2019 to spearhead these efforts in mutual consultation with the university community.

The new version of the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity will be published today. Recently, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), Netherlands Federation of University Medical Centres (NFU), Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), Associated Applied Research Institutes (TO2), Netherlands Association of Universities of Applied Sciences (VH), and the Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU) worked together intensively to thoroughly amend and expand the Code of Conduct that has been in use since 2004. The Code of Conduct will enter into force on 1 October 2018.

Today, an international group of research councils called ‘cOAlition S’ and including the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, announced a plan for accelerating the transition to open access. The essence of the plan is that from 1 January 2020 onwards, all publications that emerge from research funded by these research councils must be published in open access journals or open access platforms.

Cyberattacks or disruptions on the cyber domain occur regularly. Sometimes vital sectors are target, such as banking, energy or transport. The attacks can therefore have a considerable impact on society. Cybersecurity is logically part of our national security. This requires that our knowledge remains up-to-date and that we anticipate possible new developments and threats. On June 5, dcypher launched the 3rd edition of the National Cyber Security Research Agenda (NCSRA III).

In April and June 2017, NWO organised a national and an international working conference on the respective topics of peer review and application pressure. Subsequently, in September of that year NWO announced which measures it is planning to take to reduce the application pressure for researchers. By implementing these measures NWO aims to achieve an award rate of at least 25%.

From now on, project leaders can authorise others to carry out administrative actions for their project in NWO's online application and reporting system ISAAC.

Today, NWO announced its new strategy for the period 2019-2022. The strategic plan describes five ambitions of NWO to facilitate the scientific and societal impact of Dutch research in the coming years. This requires an effective organisation that focuses on the connection within science and between science and society.

The nine NWO institutes have been evaluated by panels of independent, international experts. The experts praise the innovative research, the global position and the national role of the institutes. The scientific quality, societal relevance and future viability were in all cases assessed as ‘very good’ or even ‘world leading’.

The NWO executive board has appointed an advisory council consisting of ten members for a period of four years. This new body can provide solicited and unsolicited advice to the executive board about developments in science and society that are relevant to NWO.

The executive board and supervisory board of NWO have taken a final decision about the relocation of SRON Utrecht to Leiden. This decision follows the intended decision that was announced in December. In line with the current plans, SRON Utrecht will relocate to a single new building at the Bio Science Park of Leiden University, next to the current Huygens laboratory.
