Some doctoral students know that their future does not lie in the academic world once they’ve gained their PhD. The physicist Sten Reijers, for instance, a third-year research assistant at the University of Twente, is going into business. Together with five friends, four of whom are also physicists, he recently launched his own company, Chaintip, that advises on blockchains. Remarkably, he is combining business with studies: NWO was prepared to alter his contract, allowing him to become a part-time PhD student from September onwards.

In the coming years almost a hundred researchers are going to develop innovative technologies together with industry and social organisations. That will happen in six new Perspectief programmes, which have been given the green light by NWO, Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research. The programmes should lead to a new 3D printer for large metal components, more efficient deep-learning systems, extreme microscopy, new bacteria for the chemical industry, injury-free exercise and wearable robotics for people suffering from muscular disorders.

During the course of 2018, NWO will implement a simplified set of funding instruments in all its domains. From 1 August 2018 onwards, researchers will be able to submit proposals for the first calls published in accordance with this new model. With this measure, the NWO Executive Board intends to create a higher degree of clarity in the research funding and a better connection between the domains for multidisciplinary research proposals.

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded 34 leading scientists a Vici grant worth one and half million euros. Vici is one of the largest grants for individual scientists in the Netherlands and is part of NWO's Talent Scheme. The funding will enable the scientists to develop their own innovative research line for the next five years and build up their own research group.
