Several Neanderthal sites in France have yielded large numbers of small black blocs. Neanderthals used these 'manganese oxides' in fire-making and not as previously thought for colouring.

On Friday, 10 June 2016 the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) will organise the event Bessensap together with the Dutch Association of Science Journalists (VWN) at the Rode Hoed in Amsterdam. Each year this event brings together about 400 journalists, press officers and researchers. Researchers who want to give a presentation about their research during Bessensap can now submit a proposal.

32 excellent scientists have received a Vici grant of 1.5 million euros from NWO. The funding will enable the laureates to do research for the next five years and to build up their own research group. Vici is one of the largest grants for individual scientists in the Netherlands and is part of NWO's Talent Scheme.

The shrinking of mudflats along the coasts of the Chinese Yellow Sea is an increasing problem for migratory birds that travel between Siberia and Australia. Research by an international team of ecologists, led by Spinoza laureate professor Theunis Piersma, a senior scientist at NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research and professor in Global Flyway Ecology at the University of Groningen, shows that three different species are in decline because of one common factor: loss of food and habitat along the coasts of the Yellow Sea, because of the increasing claim of land by the Chinese government.

The results, relevance and impact of the research programme Agriculture beyond Food for Dutch policy were presented and discussed at the final conference. Previously the societal and economic impacts of the results were identified and discussed in Jakarta, Indonesia. Also a book on the programme was launched that was now officially presented in the Netherlands.
