There is an urgent and growing need for new knowledge that contributes to new insights, policies and practices to meet food security challenges. GCP-funded research projects aim to generate research-based advanced understanding of emerging key issues in food security and their impact on regional and local food security, and the role of private sector development. The projects focus on sustainable food systems and/or urbanization and challenges for food and nutrition security in Ethiopia, Kenia, Benin and Indonesia.

Achmea, Rabobank and NWO Physical Sciences are organising a workshop to interest the scientific community for participation in the research programme Data-driven Research for Banking & Insurance. Researchers are invited to submit areas of interest to join the workshop and to help fine-tune the research topics within this programme. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, 26 January 2016 from 13.00-16.00. The venue will be Achmea Conference Center in Zeist.
It could never be found until recently, in a fish tank a few floors below Radboud University’s microbiology department: one single organism able to perform the complete process of nitrification. Microbiologists used to think that two distinct groups of bacteria were responsible for the stepwise oxidation of ammonia to nitrate via nitrite. Nature magazine publishes the results – which have implications on climate research and wastewater treatment – on November 26.
NWO will tighten its granting conditions in the area of Open Access with effect from 1 December. In concrete terms this means that all publications emerging from a 'call for proposals’ published by NWO after this date must be immediately accessible to everybody from the moment of publication.

Women who nurse negative thoughts about their appearance think that people look at them just as disapprovingly. Such a negative body image can lead to a wide range of complaints, from depression to eating disorders and obesity. A solution appears to be at hand: women who concentrate on what their body can do instead of what it looks like are far more satisfied about their appearance. Psychologist Jessica Alleva discovered this during her PhD project ‘Give us a smile and lighten us up’ that she carried out with funding from the Free competition of NWO Division for the Social Sciences. Alleva defends her PhD thesis on Wednesday 25 November at Maastricht University.
‘You’re never ready for the next step. Just go for it, even if you’re scared to death.’ This statement by the event’s host, Eva Jinek, kicked off the day for more than 600 women in Amersfoort. Pump Your Career, a talent and career day for women in science, was organised by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the Dutch Network for Women Professors (LNVH). The air temperature in urban areas often differs from that of the surrounding countryside, a phenomenon that is known as the ’urban heat island’. This thesis deals with understanding the physical processes that determine the urban heat island and how it relates to natural and anthropogenic factors.

NWO-WOTRO Science for Global Development granted six projects as part of the second call for proposals within the Urbanising Deltas of the World Programme. The projects cover a variety of innovative approaches towards challenges in delta areas in Bangladesh, India, Vietnam, and Ghana. The projects in in the second call specifically target cooperation between researchers and businesses, with partners from the Netherlands and the water partner countries of Dutch Development cooperation. The UDW programme is a joint activity of NWO and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, aligned to the topsector Water.

NordForsk, together with the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) is issuing a preannouncement for a call within the Nordic Societal Security Programme. The call will be issued in December with application deadline 15 March 2016.
