152 highly promising researchers can realise their research plan over the next three years thanks to a Veni grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). A Veni grant is worth a maximum of 250,00 euros, made available by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and is one of the individual grants from NWO to promote scientific talent. The scientists are doing research into a wide range of subjects, from the effect of the activity of a nerve on fretting to the development of the universe and the genetic code of poisonous snakes.

A total of 88 scientists have each received a maximum of 800,000 euros to develop an innovative line of research and to build up their own research group. They have received a Vidi Grant from the Talent Scheme of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The Talent Scheme consists of the Veni, Vidi and Vici grants.

Earth scientist Jorien Vonk has won the Vening Meinesz Prize. She is investigating the influence of melting permafrost on the climate. Vonk is the first woman to have won this prize of 10,000 euros for the best earth sciences research by a researcher who has gained his or her PhD within the past five years.
