20 million euros for scientists delayed by corona

7 October 2020

The Dutch Research Council (NWO) is responding to a request by Ingrid Van Engelshoven, Minister of Education, Culture and Science, to make a maximum of 20 million euros available for scientists whose work has been delayed by corona.

The budget for these corona measures means a reduction in the grant funds earmarked for the Dutch Research Agenda in 2021. The Minister’s appeal follows urgent requests from the field and was announced in a letter to the House of Representatives.

The budget that NWO will put forward for these measures will mainly go to researchers who have been delayed in the final phase of their temporary appointment and can no longer adapt their research design. It also means that next year there will be less money available for regular science funding, because no extra funds will be made available from central government. That is why NWO and various parties in the field of science have been calling for a structural expansion of the total science budget for some time now.
