The Dutch Research Council and ZonMw: open access joins the battle against coronavirus

31 January 2020

The Dutch Research Council (NWO) and ZonMw support the call of international research funding bodies and scientific publishers to make research about the coronavirus open access as quickly as possible.

The outbreak of the new coronavirus in Wuhan, China (2019-nCoV) forms a major threat to public health. Worldwide, researchers are working under immense pressure to analyse the pathogen. The crucial genetic data about the disease was already shared several weeks ago via an open repository and that has enabled researchers to jointly study the pathogen.

In response to that, several international research funding bodies have requested that publications and research data relevant for combating the disease are made open access as quickly as possible. This previously happened in response to the Zika outbreak in South America and the Ebola crisis in Africa.

NWO and ZonMw support this call and request:

  • journals to make all publications in whatever form (articles, pre-prints), including the underlying data, open access as quickly as possible;
  • researchers to work on sharing their results, in whatever form, as quickly as possible, and to make these available to the World Health Organization (WHO).
