Margot Weijnen and Anita Hardon new members of executive board

4 September 2019

The Minister of Education, Culture and Science has appointed two new members to the executive board. Margot Weijnen will be the new chair for the NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences, starting 1 March 2020. Anita Hardon will take office on 1 June as the new chair of the NWO Domain Social Sciences and Humanities.

Margot Weijnen

Prof. Margot Weijnen (62) is full professor of Process & Energy Systems Engineering at the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). She also took her PhD at TU Delft and has worked for Shell and the Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR). She is currently a member of the supervisory boards of AkzoNobel Nederland BV and the HAN University of Applied Sciences. She will stand down from the latter position as a result of incompatibility of duties.

Anita Hardon

Prof. Anita Hardon (58) is professor of Anthropology of Care and Health at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), the university where she also obtained her PhD in 1990. She is vice-chair of the Social Sciences Council of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and a member of the supervisory board of the Rutgers Foundation. She is also chair of the Steering and Advisory Group of the Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction of the Human Reproduction Programme sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Population Fund, the United Nation’s Children Fund, the World Health Organization and the World Bank.

Changes as of 1 January 2020

The current domain chairs’ terms expire in late 2019. Both Jaap Schouten and Wim van den Doel have already indicated that they will not stand for another term. Jaap Schouten has agreed to remain until Margot Weijnen takes office on 1 March. The executive board is still consulting with NWO’s supervisory board to appoint an observer for the NWO Domain Social Sciences and Humanities for the period January to June 2020.

Jeroen Geurts (Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development – ZonMw) and Niek Lopes Cardozo (NWO Domain Science) will remain members of the executive board, as will Stan Gielen and Caroline Visser.
