NWA call Ecology & North Sea open for applications

29 July 2019

The Ecology & North Sea call within the thematic programming of the Dutch National Research Agenda (NWA) is now open. The focus of this call is on the interaction between ecology and the physical aspects of wind farms on the Dutch part of the North Sea. Researchers from knowledge institutions and other interested parties can submit research proposals until 24 October.

The aim of the programme Ecology and North Sea is to develop knowledge within this context across the entire chain concerning the specific interaction between ecology and the physical aspects of wind turbines and wind farms and to provide an action perspective for policy, implementation and practice. The programme focuses on crucial interactions and possible bottlenecks, such as interactions between wind turbines and birds or bats, and the effects on the ecosystem's capacity. Providing a hard substrate and an undisturbed seafloor are examples of interactions that provide ecological opportunities.

NWA Line 2

NWO realises the NWA programme on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW). Part of this programme is action line 2 that covers thematic programmes suitable for a broad NWA approach and that are developed in consultation with the ministries. The call for proposals for the theme Ecology & North Sea will be realised in the context of action line 2. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy and the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality are the initiators for this call. This call’s budget is 2.8 million euros; the deadline is 24 October 2019, 2pm.

About the Dutch National Research Agenda

The Dutch Research Agenda (NWA) describes broad, challenging subjects that require a national approach and with which Dutch research can strengthen society and the knowledge economy. The NWA was established through an innovative process that involved the input of citizens and scientists. The NWA is from and for everybody; therefore it can only be implemented with the involvement of everybody! On behalf of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science  (OCW) NWO has funded interdisciplinary research across the entire knowledge chain in the context of the NWA since 2018, for example via thematic programming. The aim of the thematic NWA programmes, which are realised in collaboration with government ministries, is to find answers to current societal questions.
