To be published soon: call with South Africa on Water-Energy-Food nexus

6 June 2019

The South African National Research Foundation and NWO are launching a new research programme. This programme falls under the Merian Fund and focuses on further stimulating joint, impact-oriented research between Dutch and South African researchers. The first call for proposals aims to contribute to the Water-Energy-Food nexus in relation to the big South African societal challenges, and is expected to be published in the second half of June.

The Water-Energy-Food nexus

The Water-Energy-Food (WEF) nexus has high priority in South Africa. Within this new research programme, the focus will be on the WEF nexus in relation to the big social challenges such as poverty reduction, unemployment and capacity building. Applications must focus on a specific regional, provincial or local context, which can serve as a "showcase". The entire knowledge chain - from fundamental to applied research - as well as relevant governments and societal partners should be involved in the programme. There must also be explicit attention to the transferability of the knowledge developed.

Bilateral cooperation

Cooperation South Africa - The Netherlands is a new research programme between the South African National Research Foundation (NRF) and NWO. This bilateral research programme builds on earlier collaboration, such as in the LEAP-Agri programme, and various collaborations in the field of Astronomy. The first call for proposals will be part of multi-year programming within the Merian Fund.

About the Merian Fund

Within the Merian Fund, international cooperation with emerging science and developing countries plays an important role. Flexibility in themes and partner countries will be the key factor in organising bilateral and multilateral funding rounds. The common thread will be research that supports the worldwide achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Domains and institutes of NWO and of the Taskforce for Applied Research (NPRO-SIA) will contribute from their own expertise, instruments and networks. WOTRO SCience for Global Development is responsible for the implementation of the calls.
