NWO starts fund for Science Diplomacy

25 June 2019

With effect from 1 January 2020, NWO will initiate a new fund with which activities in the Science for Diplomacy field will be organised with countries that the Netherlands wishes to intensify its diplomatic relations with. NWO will make 250,000 euros per year available for this fund and will collaborate closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in realising this.

The arrival of this new fund means that with effect from 1 January 2020, NWO will also change its policy with respect to the Visitor’s Travel Grant and Joint Seminars Grant. The permanent call, for which scientists throughout the world can apply, will cease to exist.

The current Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with four international organisations – the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the Ministry of Science and Technology Taiwan (MOST), Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the Von Humboldt Stiftung (VHS) – will, however, be continued. As a result of this, funds will be released that NWO can deploy more strategically to strengthen scientific and diplomatic relations with specific countries.

NWO Strategy 2019-2022

The establishment of a fund for Science Diplomacy is a further elaboration of the NWO strategy 2019-2022 "Connecting science and society", in which NWO already announced that it wanted to deploy the Visitor’s Travel Grant and other funding instruments more strategically.
