Fourteen Dutch projects within African-European partnership granted

27 December 2018

Within the first call of proposals of the LEAP-Agri partnership, a joint Europe Africa Research and Innovation initiative, 27 projects have been funded on sustainable agriculture and aquaculture and on food and nutrition security. Dutch researchers are involved within fourteen projects, of which four as main applicant. NWO-WOTRO funds ten projects.

The African European High level Policy Dialogue on Science, Technology and Innovation prioritised Food and Nutrition Security and Sustainable Agriculture (FNSSA) and build a roadmap to implement its strategy. Thirty European and African partners (including 24 funding agencies from 18 countries) from the LEAP-Agri partnership cooperated, based on shared responsibilities and duties, with the financial support of the European Commission. The 27 newly funded LEAP-Agri projects are part of the roadmap implementation. In total of around 23 Million euros is committed by the partners and the European Commission to finance these projects.

The projects are funded in the LEAP-Agri call for proposals on ‘African European collaborative research for Sustainable Agriculture and Aquaculture and on Food and Nutrition Security’. Each of the 27 projects is carried out by a consortium of researchers from at least four different countries, two African and two European. The Dutch projects are funded by NWO-WOTRO (ten in total) and the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (four projects, marked with an *).

Kicking of the projects

The transnational research projects started at a kick-off meeting in Bari, Italy, on 9-10 October. During the kick-off, the projects worked in sub-sessions to identify synergies and possibilities for cooperation between the different projects within different five groups, according to their (thematic) focus and/or approach. Also, a joint LEAP-Agri Impact Pathway was developed by the projects.
