Membership international drilling programmes IODP and ICDP continued

27 November 2018

During the Nederlands Aardwetenschappelijk Congres (NAC) on 14 and 15 March 2019, NWO will sign for the continued membership to the geological drilling programmes IODP and ICDP. This will give Dutch researchers another five years of access to large-scale international research facilities.

The Integrated Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) is an international research programme that does drillings and measurements in sediments and rocks in the sea floor. The International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) funds continental drillings to gain a better understanding of processes in the earth's crust.

The NWO Domain Science Board has decided that NWO will pay the contribution for the membership of IODP and ICDP for the period 2019 to 2023 on behalf of the Netherlands. The total budget for this is 3.5 million euros. With this, the Netherlands will remain a member of both programmes, which received positive evaluations earlier in 2018. The contribution has even been increased, as a result of which more Dutch researchers will be able to gain access to the valuable drilling vessels, drill cores and data centres. This will provide knowledge about the structure of the earth, the earth's climate and life on earth long ago.
