NWO invests 17.9 million in innovative infrastructure projects

28 September 2018

NWO has awarded seven proposals for innovative research infrastructure within the programme NWO Investment Grant Large. With this programme, NWO funds large research facilities, within which researchers from throughout the Netherlands work together, often with international partners. The total budget of 17.9 million euros will enable a wide range of researchers to carry out innovative experiments and disclose new data.

The projects awarded funding are highly diverse and drawn from the breadth of science: natural sciences, social sciences and humanities, and medical /neurosciences. One project, for example, concerns digitising and enriching the resolutions from the States General of the Netherlands from the 16th to 18th centuries and making these data searchable. Another project will investigate how new ultrasound technology and data analysis techniques can enable major advances in the study of brain activity. Virgo, the European Observatory for gravitational waves, will receive an equipment upgrade with which the number of observed sources of gravitational waves can be increased by a factor of eight.

Investments in infrastructure that strengthen Dutch science

Equipment, data collections and software funded by NWO Investment Grant Large strengthen the possibilities for Dutch scientific research and the opportunities for international collaboration. The investments required for this amount to millions of euros, and are therefore difficult for individual institutions to fund. Based on scientific quality, national role and societal importance, NWO selects the projects eligible for the NWO Investment Grant Large.

Selection procedure

NWO received 24 proposals for the programme NWO Investment Grant Large. The proposals were assessed by an advisory committee made up of researchers from various disciplines. The committee assessed the proposals based on several criteria (science & excellence case; innovation & strategic case; technical, business & management case) and visited 13 applicants to discuss their proposal further. Seven projects have received a grant. The awarded NWO contribution varies from about 1.5 to 3.5 million euros.

The next round of NWO Investment Grant Large is expected to open in the autumn of 2019.
